Yasukichi Murakami,a leader of the Japanese community in Broome ,was a friend and partner of the legendary pearling master Captain Ancell Gregory.Murakami and Gregory forged a lasting partnership in Broome at the turn of the century that was characterized by ingenuity, innovation and willingness to take a risk.

In 1922 Murakami and Gregory forged a secretive plan to produce cultured pearls at Entrance Point close to this spot. When the town discovered their plan the outcry was such they were forced to close the operation, with the police destroying all of their equipment. Thus ended the first attempt to produce cultured pearls in Australia.

When Japan entered WWU,Murakami was interned along with the rest of Broome’s Japanese community . After a lifetime in Broome he could not stand the cold and damp of the internment camp in Victoria and died there of pleurisy in 1943.

It is fitting that the road servicing Broome’s cultured pearl shell hatchery should bear Yasukichi Murakami’s name.
